During this creative arts workshop, children will experience impressionist painting first hand. Through the work of Monet and experimenting themselves with the technique, they’ll understand why Impressionism made such a dramatic change in the way we experience art and how it opened up the path to abstract painting and modern art as we know it.
The workshop includes a short theoretical introduction. Its aim is to give children hands-on experience of the style. Children will produce their own painting in the impressionist spirit.
A few words on Monet
Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France and died in 1926 in Giverny. He was a renowned French painter and one of the most famous artists in the history of art. His work gave a name to the art movement Impressionism. He was concerned with capturing light and natural forms. His works can be seen in museums around the world.
Monet is considered the master of light and color. He studied at the Academie Suisse. After an art exhibition in 1874, a critic insultingly dubbed Monet’s painting style “Impression,” since it was more concerned with form and light than realism, and the term stuck.
Monet once wrote, “My only merit lies in having painted directly in front of nature, seeking to render my impressions of the most fleeting effects.” Most art historians believe that Monet accomplished much more than this: He helped change the world of painting by shaking off the conventions of the past. By dissolving forms in his works, Monet opened the door for further abstraction in art. He is credited with influencing such later artists as Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning.(c.f. biography.com).
